Many of us think taking a break from training is a sign of weakness..
"No Pain, No Gain," they say..
Well, from my experience rest and recovery are training tools that must be included in any training program.
If not, you can forget about making progress if not halting it completely.
Overtraining is one of the quickest ways to sabotage progress.
It causes our body's hormones to get out of whack.
The physical stress put on your body from training is no different from emotional stress.. you eventually need a break or else you'll explode.
Cortisol, in particular, is affected by the stress and if you constantly overtrain you'll eventually run into a bunch of issues like:
- muscle breakdown
- testosterone decrease
- fat increase making weight loss tough
- minimum nutrient intake
- not reaching your goals
Below are just a few of the benefits of rest and recovery:
- rebuilds muscle tissue
- strengthens joints and ligaments
- food stores replenished leading to more energy
- reduces stress
I recommend taking a minimum of two days off a week, drinking lots of water, getting plenty of sleep and eating healthy, nutritious foods.
You can't build the body you desire without rest and recovery PERIOD.
